Target Information
Members of the trefoil family are characterized by having at least one copy of the trefoil motif, a 40-amino acid domain containing three conserved disulfides. They are stable secretory proteins expressed in gastrointestinal mucosa. Their functions may include protecting the mucosa from insults, stabilizing the mucus layer, and aiding epithelial healing.
This gene, expressed in the gastric mucosa, has also been studied for its role in human tumors. It is clustered with two other trefoil family genes on chromosome 21.
