Target Information

The PKC family of serine/threonine kinases, including PRKCG (PKC gamma), is activated intracellularly by signal transduction pathways. In humans, at least 12 different PKC polypeptides have been identified. These isoforms differ in structure, tissue distribution, subcellular localization, and substrate specificity. PKC alpha, beta I, beta II, and gamma form the conventional family, whose activities are Ca²⁺- and phospholipid-dependent.

PKC family members phosphorylate a wide variety of protein targets and are involved in diverse signaling pathways. PKC gamma is expressed solely in the brain and spinal cord, localized to neurons, and is required for neuronal functions such as long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). Knockout studies suggest involvement in neuropathic pain development. Defects in PKC gamma are associated with spinocerebellar ataxia-14 (SCA14).
