Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a major role in regulating metabolic and immune processes by secreting bioactive molecules called adipokines.
The adiponectin/ACRP30 family and its paralogs, CTRPs 1–7, are highly conserved adipokines. Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed exclusively by adipocytes, CTRPs are expressed in various tissues and mainly act on liver and muscle to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism.
Structural analysis of adiponectin shows an evolutionary link between TNF and C1q-containing proteins, suggesting a common ancestral origin. Like other members of this family, mature CTRP7 is secreted and circulates within the organism.
