Target Information
SOAT1 (Sterol O-acyltransferase-1), also designated ACAT1, is a homotetrameric enzyme that catalyzes the formation of cholesterol esters from cholesterol and long-chain fatty acyl-coenzyme A (acyl-CoA).
The human SOAT1 gene maps to chromosome 1 and encodes a protein localized in the endoplasmic reticulum of tissues including liver, kidney, adrenal glands, and macrophages.
SOAT1 plays a key role in cellular cholesterol homeostasis and foam cell formation, contributing to atherosclerosis progression.
Several SOAT inhibitors have been developed for atherosclerosis treatment.
SOAT2 (Sterol O-acyltransferase-2), also known as ACAT2, participates in lipoprotein assembly and cholesterol esterification in mammalian cells.
SOAT2 deficiency is associated with severe mental retardation and hypotonia.
