Target Information
Chromosome 6 accounts for nearly 6% of the human genome, containing approximately 1,200 genes across 170 million base pairs. Deletions in the q arm are linked to early-onset intestinal cancer, suggesting a cancer susceptibility locus.
The HFE gene on chromosome 6 is associated with porphyria cutanea tarda, while the PARK2 gene relates to Parkinson’s disease.
Genes encoding major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins, determining immune responses and rheumatic disease predisposition, are also located here.
Other disorders associated with genes on chromosome 6 include Stickler syndrome, 21-hydroxylase deficiency, and maple syrup urine disease. A bipolar disorder susceptibility locus has also been identified on the q arm of chromosome 6.
