Target Information

Gemin 3 (DDX20) is a member of the DEAD box protein family, characterized by the conserved Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD) motif. These proteins are putative RNA helicases involved in RNA secondary structure modification processes such as translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly.
Some DEAD box proteins are implicated in embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division. Gemin 3 exhibits ATPase activity and functions as a component of the survival of motor neurons (SMN) complex, potentially playing a catalytic role in RNP function.
Dysfunction of Gemin 3 is associated with spinal muscular dystrophy and muscular atrophy.
