Target Information
Actins are highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility and cytoskeleton maintenance.
Three main actin isoforms exist in vertebrates: alpha, beta, and gamma.
- Alpha actins: Found in muscle tissue, major component of the contractile apparatus.
- Beta and gamma actins: Present in most cell types, function in cytoskeleton structure and internal motility.
- Actin gamma 1 (ACTG1)* is a cytoplasmic actin expressed in all cell types.
Mutations in this gene are linked to DFNA20/26 (autosomal dominant non-syndromic progressive hearing loss) and Baraitser-Winter syndrome.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants.
