Steroid 5alpha-Reductase는 안드로겐 생리에서 중요한 효소로, 테스토스테론을 더 강력한 5alpha-dihydro-testosterone으로 전환시켜 표적 조직에서 안드로겐 효과를 매개합니다.
이 효소는 두 가지 이소형으로 존재합니다.
- Type 1: 주로 피부에서 발현

인체 피부세포에서 5alpha-Reductase 1은 단백질의 이질성을 보이며, 전사 및 번역 수준에서 다른 발현 양상을 나타냅니다. 또한 모낭의 모든 부분에서 발현되며, 5alpha-Reductase 2는 중간엽 부분에서만 발현됩니다.

또한, 5alpha-Reductase-3alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 복합체는 인간 뇌에도 존재하여, 신경활성 스테로이드의 합성 또는 신경독성 스테로이드의 대사에 관여할 가능성이 있습니다.
