Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into an active 17 kDa protein through inflammasome activation. This process involves caspase-1, which cleaves pro-IL-1β into its active form. IL-1β lacks a classical signal peptide and is secreted via an alternate mechanism along with caspase-1. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, which are shared with IL-1α, and its activity can be inhibited by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1β plays a key role in innate immunity and inflammation, and elevated levels are associated with various chronic inflammatory diseases.
