Target Information
DNA-binding protein SATB2 binds to DNA at the nuclear matrix- or scaffold-associated regions. It recognizes the sugar-phosphate structure of double-stranded DNA and functions as a transcription factor controlling nuclear gene expression. SATB2 binds to matrix attachment regions (MARs) of DNA, inducing local chromatin-loop remodeling and recruiting chromatin remodeling enzymes such as HDACs and HATs to promoters and enhancers.
SATB2 is essential for initiating upper-layer neuron (UL1) specific gene programs and modulating BCL11B expression. It acts as a repressor of Ctip2 and regulates corticocortical connections in developing cerebral cortex. Mutations in SATB2 are associated with cleft palate isolated (CPI).
