Target Information
This gene encodes a bitter taste receptor belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. Bitter taste receptors are expressed in taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. Each gene encodes a 7-transmembrane receptor protein functioning as a bitter taste receptor. TAS2R5 is clustered with other taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and is genetically linked to loci influencing bitter perception. The receptor may play roles in bitterness perception and sensing gastrointestinal chemical composition. Its activity may stimulate alpha gustducin, mediate PLC-beta-2 activation, and lead to TRPM5 gating. Expressed in gustducin-positive taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelium.
