Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the STAT family of transcription factors. In response to cytokines and growth factors, STAT family members are phosphorylated by receptor-associated kinases, then form homo- or heterodimers that translocate to the cell nucleus to act as transcription activators.
This protein mediates signal transduction triggered by ligands such as IL2, IL4, CSF1, and various growth hormones. It is involved in processes including TCR signaling, apoptosis, adult mammary gland development, and sexual dimorphism of liver gene expression.
Additionally, this gene can fuse with the retinoic acid receptor-alpha (RARA) gene in a subset of acute promyelocytic leukemias (APLL). Dysregulation of its signaling pathways may contribute to APLL pathogenesis.
