Target Information
The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure composed of four rings of 28 non-identical subunits. Two rings contain seven alpha subunits and two rings contain seven beta subunits. Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and cleave peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal process. The immunoproteasome, a modified form, processes class I MHC peptides.
The PSMB7 gene encodes a member of the proteasome B-type (T1B) family, a 20S core beta subunit. Its expression is downregulated by gamma interferon, and proteolytic processing is required for maturation. This subunit is absent in the immunoproteasome, where it is replaced by the beta 10 subunit (2i).
