Target Information
Neurofibromin is a member of the GTPase-activating (GAP) class of proteins that enhance the GTPase activity of signaling G-proteins such as Ras. The NF1 gene functions as a tumor suppressor, and mutations at the NF1 locus are associated with neurofibromas, rhabdomyosarcomas, leiomyosarcomas, mental retardation, and memory deficiency. Neurofibromin is also linked to intermediate filaments of the cytoskeleton and is highly expressed during desmosome formation. NF1 mutations can lead to variable cell sizes and morphologies.
