Target Information
The Caspase-3 gene encodes a cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family member that plays a crucial role in the execution phase of cell apoptosis. Caspases are synthesized as inactive proenzymes that undergo proteolytic processing to generate active subunits forming the functional enzyme. Caspase-3 cleaves and activates caspases 6, 7, and 9, and is itself activated by caspases 8, 9, and 10. It is the predominant caspase involved in the cleavage of amyloid-beta precursor protein, associated with neuronal death in Alzheimer’s disease. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
