Target Information
Action potentials in vertebrate neurons are followed by an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) that may persist for several seconds and influence neuronal firing patterns. Each AHP component is kinetically distinct and mediated by different calcium-activated potassium channels.
The KCNN2 gene encodes a protein that regulates neuronal excitability by contributing to the slow component of synaptic AHP. This integral membrane protein forms a voltage-independent calcium-activated channel with calmodulin-binding subunits.
KCNN2 belongs to the KCNN family of potassium channel genes, and two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
