Target Information

The SHANK2 gene encodes a protein that belongs to the Shank family of synaptic proteins, functioning as molecular scaffolds in the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses. Shank proteins include multiple domains for protein-protein interactions such as ankyrin repeats and an SH3 domain. This family member contains a PDZ domain, a consensus sequence for cortactin SH3 domain-binding peptides, and a sterile alpha motif.
Alternative splicing in Shank genes regulates the molecular structure and interaction profile of Shank proteins in the adult and developing brain. Mutations or alterations in SHANK2 may be associated with susceptibility to autism spectrum disorder. Multiple transcript variants are produced through alternative splicing.
