Target Information
Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. They participate in processes such as respiration, calcification, acid-base balance, bone resorption, and formation of various body fluids (aqueous humor, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, gastric juice).
The human CA5A gene encodes the CA V protein, which is expressed in the mitochondrial matrix of liver tissues and detected in other tissues. In ureagenesis, CA V may provide bicarbonate to carbamoyl phosphate synthetase.
