Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA, unlike their prokaryotic counterparts. The 28S subunit may play a key role in translation initiation. The MRPS31 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein potentially linked to type 1 diabetes, though its role in disease etiology remains unclear. Pseudogenes exist on chromosomes 3 and 13.
