Target Information
This gene encodes the large subunit of DNA damage-binding protein, a heterodimer composed of large and small subunits. This protein functions in nucleotide-excision repair. Defective activity causes the repair defect in patients with xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group E (XPE). Mutation analysis is required to determine whether the defect lies in this gene or in the gene encoding the small subunit. Additionally, Best vitelliform macular dystrophy is mapped to the same region (11q), but no sequence alterations of this gene are demonstrated in Best disease patients.
