Target Information
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptor proteins belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family derived from single coding-exon genes.
They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for recognition and G protein-mediated signal transduction of odorant molecules.
The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific.
