Target Information
Alpha actinins belong to the spectrin gene superfamily, a group of cytoskeletal proteins including alpha and beta spectrins and dystrophins. Alpha actinin is an actin-binding protein with multiple roles across cell types.
In nonmuscle cells, it localizes along microfilament bundles and adherens-type junctions, linking actin to the membrane.
In muscle cells (skeletal, cardiac, smooth), it is found in the Z-disc and dense bodies, anchoring myofibrillar actin filaments.
This gene encodes a nonmuscle alpha actinin isoform concentrated in the cytoplasm and implicated in metastatic processes.
Mutations are associated with focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis.
