Target Information
This gene belongs to the type IV, cyclic AMP (cAMP)-specific, cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) family. Cyclic nucleotides act as second messengers regulating cellular responses to extracellular stimuli such as hormones, light, and neurotransmitters. PDEs control cellular cyclic nucleotide concentrations and thus influence signal transduction. The PDE4B protein specifically hydrolyzes cAMP, and altered activity has been linked to schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. Multiple splice variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
