Target Information
L1CAM (CD171) is an axonal glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily. Its ectodomain includes multiple immunoglobulin-like and fibronectin type III domains, connected via a single transmembrane region to a conserved cytoplasmic domain.
This cell adhesion molecule is critical for nervous system development, influencing neuronal migration and differentiation. Mutations in the L1CAM gene cause X-linked neurological syndromes collectively known as CRASH (corpus callosum hypoplasia, retardation, aphasia, spastic paraplegia, and hydrocephalus).
Alternative splicing of a neuron-specific exon is believed to be functionally significant.
