Target Information

CD83 cell surface antigen is a 40–45 kDa glycoprotein expressed by peripheral blood dendritic cells. Peripheral lymphocytes can be induced to express low levels of CD83 after stimulation with agents such as Con A or PHA.
In immunohistology, CD83 is strongly expressed by interfollicular interdigitating reticulum cells and weakly by cells within germinal centers. It is also expressed by Langerhans cells in the skin.

The CD83 antigen is a 186-amino-acid single-chain glycoprotein, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It consists of an extracellular V-type Ig-like domain, a transmembrane region, and a short 40-amino-acid cytoplasmic tail. CD83 undergoes extensive post-translational glycosylation, resulting in a molecular weight approximately twice that of the predicted core protein.

CD83+ cells display a unique surface phenotype distinct from T cells, B cells, NK cells, or myelomonocytic cells. They coexpress high levels of MHC class II molecules and various lineage markers (CD2, CD5, CD40, CD78, CD13, CD33, CD36), as well as cytokine receptors and other surface molecules.
Diseases associated with CD83 dysfunction include plague and Rift Valley Fever.
