Target Information
MARCO (Macrophage Receptor with Collagenous Structure), also known as SR-A6 or SCARA2, is a macrophage surface receptor and a member of the class A scavenger receptor family. It participates in the innate antimicrobial immune system by binding both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria through its extracellular, C-terminal, scavenger receptor cysteine-rich (SRCR) domain.
The protein includes short cytoplasmic and transmembrane domains, an extracellular spacer domain, and a long collagenous domain. MARCO may form a trimeric molecule via association of the collagenous domains of three identical polypeptide chains.
Due to its expression in tumor-infiltrating macrophages and its role in suppressing immune responses within the tumor microenvironment, MARCO is considered a potential target for cancer immunotherapy.
