Target Information
Human growth hormone (hGH) is a member of the somatotropin/prolactin hormone family, which plays a crucial role in growth control. The GH1 gene, along with four related genes, is located at the growth hormone locus on chromosome 17 and shares high sequence identity. Alternative splicing produces five isoforms (~19–24 kDa). hGH is secreted by pituitary somatotroph cells and acts through cytokine receptor subfamily membrane receptors. It stimulates the liver and other tissues to secrete IGF-1, promoting muscle differentiation, proliferation, amino acid uptake, and protein synthesis. Mutations or deletions in GH1 cause growth hormone deficiency and short stature.
