The 26S proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex composed of two main structures: the 20S core and the 19S regulator.

The 20S core consists of four rings with 28 non-identical subunits (two rings of seven alpha subunits and two rings of seven beta subunits).
The 19S regulator includes a base (six ATPase subunits and two non-ATPase subunits) and a lid (up to ten non-ATPase subunits).
Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and function in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal peptide cleavage process.
The immunoproteasome variant plays a key role in processing class I MHC peptides.
This gene encodes one of the non-ATPase subunits of the 19S regulator lid.
