CD26 (dipeptidyl peptidase IV, DPP IV; adenosine deaminase (ADA) binding protein) is a homodimeric atypical serine protease belonging to the prolyl oligopeptidase family.
It is expressed on lymphocytes and upregulated during T-cell activation, and also found on activated B cells, natural killer cells, and epithelial cells.
CD26 participates in T-cell activation, cell adhesion to extracellular matrix components (fibronectin, collagens), and HIV infection.
It is identical to adenosine deaminase complexing protein-2 and the T-cell activation antigen CD26.
As an intrinsic membrane glycoprotein and serine exopeptidase, CD26 cleaves X-proline dipeptides from the N-terminus of polypeptides.
Alterations in CD26 activity are associated with malignant transformation, with increased enzymatic activity correlating with tumor grade and severity.
CD26 density variations have been observed in monocytes and CD4+ T cells during rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
