Target Information
Occludin is a 65 kDa protein that can exist in multiple phosphorylated forms up to approximately 82 kDa. It plays a key role in regulating tight junction localization and function. Polyunsaturated fatty acids can up-regulate occludin expression, enhancing transendothelial resistance and reducing permeability to large molecules. Expression levels vary by tissue; brain tissue shows high and continuous expression at cell–cell contact sites, while non-neural tissues exhibit lower and discontinuous expression. Structural features of occludin are conserved across species. Under-expression of tight junction proteins, including occludin, contributes to increased permeability in tumor endothelial junctions and brain tumor edema.
