Target Information
Glycophorin C (GYPC) is an integral membrane glycoprotein found on human erythrocytes. Although it is a minor species, it plays a crucial role in regulating red cell mechanical stability. Several GYPC mutations have been identified:
- Gerbich and Yus phenotypes: due to deletion of exon 3 and 2, respectively.
- Webb and Duch antigens (glycophorin D): result from single point mutations of the glycophorin C gene.
Glycophorin C shows little homology with glycophorins A and B.
