Target Information
ACER3 is a protein coding gene. It encodes an endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi ceramidase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of unsaturated long-chain ceramides (C18:1, C20:1, C20:4), dihydroceramides, and phytoceramides into sphingoid bases such as sphingosine and free fatty acids at alkaline pH. These bioactive lipids mediate cellular signaling pathways regulating proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation.
ACER3 controls sphingosine generation in erythrocytes, influencing sphingosine-1-phosphate levels in plasma. It may play a role in neuronal survival and function by maintaining ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate homeostasis in the brain. Additionally, it may modulate inflammatory responses by regulating proinflammatory ceramide levels in immune cells and tissues.
