Target Information
Calpains are a well-conserved family of calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. These proteins are heterodimers composed of an invariant small subunit and variable large subunits. The large subunit includes a cysteine protease domain, and both subunits have calcium-binding domains. Calpains are implicated in neurodegenerative processes, as their activation can be triggered by calcium influx and oxidative stress.
The Calpain 9 protein is predominantly expressed in the stomach and small intestine and may have specialized roles in the digestive tract. It has been associated with gastric cancer, and multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
