Target Information
Thromboxane synthase encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. Although classified in the cytochrome P450 superfamily based on sequence similarity, its functional properties differ. This endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein converts prostaglandin H2 to thromboxane A2, a potent vasoconstrictor and platelet aggregation inducer. It plays roles in hemostasis, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
