Target Information
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic medication used particularly for anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It acts as an antibiotic, amebicide, and antiprotozoal agent. Metronidazole is selectively absorbed by anaerobic bacteria and sensitive protozoa, where it is reduced non-enzymatically by interacting with reduced ferredoxin generated by pyruvate oxido-reductase. The reduced intermediates form sulfinamides and thioether linkages with cysteine-bearing enzymes, deactivating these critical enzymes. Up to 150 separate enzymes may be affected. Additionally, partially reduced metabolites can bind to bacterial DNA, forming unstable molecules that disrupt replication. This reduction process occurs mainly in anaerobic cells, minimizing effects on human or aerobic cells.
