Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a major role in regulating metabolic and immune processes by secreting bioactive molecules known as adipokines. The adiponectin/ACRP30 family and its paralogs, the C1q/tumor necrosis factor-alpha-related proteins (CTRPs) 1–7, are highly conserved adipokines. Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed only by differentiated adipocytes, CTRPs are expressed in various tissues and act mainly on liver and muscle to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism. Structural studies suggest an evolutionary link between TNF and C1q-containing proteins. In obese (ob/ob) mice, mCTRP1 transcripts are significantly elevated in adipose tissue compared to normal mice.
