Target Information
Presenilins are components of the gamma-secretase protein complex, required for intramembranous processing of certain type I transmembrane proteins such as Notch and beta-amyloid precursor protein. Notch signaling regulates diverse developmental cell fates. Processing of beta-amyloid precursor protein produces amyloid beta peptides, the main component of senile plaques in Alzheimer’s disease. The PEN2 protein is essential for Notch pathway signaling and gamma-secretase activity and accumulation.
