MT-CO2는 미토콘드리아 전자전달계의 마지막 효소인 cytochrome c oxidase의 구성 요소로, 산화적 인산화를 촉진합니다.
호흡 사슬은 세 가지 다중소단위 복합체(succinate dehydrogenase, ubiquinol-cytochrome c oxidoreductase, cytochrome c oxidase)로 구성되어 있으며, NADH와 succinate로부터 유래한 전자를 산소로 전달하여 전기화학적 구배를 형성하고 ATP 합성을 유도합니다.
Cytochrome c oxidase는 산소를 물로 환원하는 반응을 촉매하며, subunit 2의 구리 A 중심과 subunit 1의 heme A를 통해 전자를 활성 부위로 전달합니다. 활성 부위는 heme A3와 구리 B로 구성된 이핵 중심으로, 4개의 전자와 4개의 프로톤을 사용하여 산소를 물로 환원합니다.
