Target Information
Carnitine acetyltransferase (CRAT) is a key enzyme involved in metabolic pathways within mitochondria, peroxisomes, and the endoplasmic reticulum. It catalyzes the reversible transfer of acyl groups from acyl-CoA thioesters to carnitine, regulating the acylCoA/CoA ratio in subcellular compartments. Alternative splicing of the CRAT gene produces three isoforms, one containing an N-terminal mitochondrial transit peptide localized to mitochondria.
