Target Information
Caspase 7 is part of a family of cysteine proteases divided into apoptotic and inflammatory subfamilies. The apoptotic caspases are involved in programmed cell death, while inflammatory caspases are linked to immune responses. Caspase 7 acts as an executioner caspase, activated by initiator caspases, and cleaves cellular substrates leading to apoptosis. It shares homology with caspases 1 and 3 and the C. elegans protein CED-3. Alternative splicing of Caspase-7 mRNA produces three distinct isoforms, and its activity can be inhibited by XIAP expression. Diseases associated with CASP7 include Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus 17 and Aleutian Mink Disease.
