Target Information
Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide-like 3 (APOBEC3) is a member of the cytidine deaminase family, acting on monomeric nucleoside and nucleotide substrates. APOBEC3G, one of its isoforms, contributes to cellular defense against retroviral infection by inducing hypermutation in viral DNA within HIV-1 virions, thereby destabilizing the viral genome. This antiviral activity is counteracted by the HIV-1 Vif protein, which promotes APOBEC3G degradation. A single amino acid substitution (D128K) can prevent this degradation without loss of inhibitory function.
