Target Information
Specialized cells at the midline, which separates the left and right halves of the CNS, have roles in directing growth cone behavior. In vertebrates, insects, and C. elegans, midline cells produce guidance cues such as nectins and slit, acting as attractants and repellents. Robo proteins serve as receptors for the repellent Slit, functioning as gatekeepers to regulate axon crossing at the midline.
Robo1 and Robo2 are human homologs of the Drosophila Roundabout protein. Robo1 is homologous to the C. elegans gene sax3, while Robo2 is homologous to the zebrafish gene astray.
