Target Information
The zinc transporter ZIP4 (SLC39A4) is part of a family of divalent ion transporters. Zinc is an essential ion involved in cell growth, development, and differentiation. ZIP4 functions as a zinc-uptake transporter in the intestine and is a candidate gene for acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE), a rare inherited defect in dietary zinc absorption. Aberrant expression of ZIP4 has been associated with cancer progression, particularly in pancreatic and hepatocellular carcinomas, where it may inhibit apoptosis, promote cell cycle progression, and enhance migration.
