Target Information

TGF-alpha is an EGF-related polypeptide growth factor that signals through the EGF receptor and stimulates proliferation of epidermal and epithelial cells. It is produced by monocytes, keratinocytes, and various tumor cells. TGF-alpha induces anchorage-independent transformation in cultured cells. Human, murine, and rat TGF-alpha are cross-species reactive. TGF-alpha (aa 50) shares 33% homology with EGF, binds to EGFR, activates receptor tyrosine phosphorylation, and promotes cell proliferation. It plays a role in tumor initiation by inducing a reversible transformed phenotype.
