VDAC2는 미토콘드리아 외막을 통한 대사체 확산의 주요 경로로 작용하는 전압 의존성 음이온 채널 단백질군에 속합니다. 또한 BCL2-antagonist/killer 1 단백질의 활성을 조절하여 미토콘드리아 세포사멸 경로에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
이 유전자의 유사유전자는 염색체 1, 2, 12, 21에 존재하며, 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사 변이체가 생성됩니다.
