Target Information
Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are essential cofactors for numerous mitochondrial and cellular enzymes. They consist of sulfur and iron and are synthesized through a multi-step process involving cysteine desulfurases, iron donors, chaperones, and scaffold proteins.
The ISCU gene encodes two isomeric forms, ISCU1 and ISCU2, which serve as Fe-S cluster scaffold proteins. Mutations in ISCU are associated with myopathy characterized by severe exercise intolerance and myoglobinuria.
