Target Information

This gene encodes coagulation factor XIII B subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen to become activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits serve as plasma carrier molecules without enzymatic activity. Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits identical to plasma origin. Upon activation by thrombin cleavage and calcium presence, plasma factor XIII dissociates its B subunits to yield the active enzyme factor XIIIa, which catalyzes gamma-glutamyl-epsilon-lysine crosslinking between fibrin molecules, stabilizing the clot.
Factor XIII deficiency is classified as:

  • Type I deficiency: lack of both A and B subunits
  • Type II deficiency: lack of A subunit only
These defects can cause lifelong bleeding tendency, impaired wound healing, and habitual abortion.
