Background
Interleukin 2 (IL-2), also known as T-cell growth factor, is a cytokine family member including IL-4, IL-7, IL-9, IL-15, and IL-21.
Each member has a four alpha helix bundle structure. IL-2 signals through the IL-2 receptor complex (α, β, γ subunits), with IL-2Rγ shared among cytokine receptors of this family.
Mature mouse IL-2 shares 56% and 73% amino acid sequence identity with human and rat IL-2, respectively.
IL-2 is produced by CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, γδ T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, and eosinophils. It plays a vital role in immune system function, tolerance, and immunity, primarily through its potent stimulatory activity for T cells.
Thus, IL-2 may be a key cytokine in the natural suppression of autoimmunity.
