Background
Cytochrome c oxidase (Complex IV, EC 1.9.3.1) is a large transmembrane protein complex found in bacteria and mitochondria. It is the final enzyme in the respiratory electron transport chain, located in the mitochondrial or bacterial membrane. The enzyme receives electrons from cytochrome c molecules and transfers them to oxygen, producing water. During this process, it contributes to the proton gradient across the membrane, which drives ATP synthesis via ATP synthase.
