Target Information
This gene belongs to the beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase (beta4GalT) family, consisting of seven related genes. These encode type II membrane-bound glycoproteins that transfer galactose in a β1,4 linkage to acceptor sugars (GlcNAc, Glc, Xyl) using UDP-galactose as donor substrate.
Each beta4GalT enzyme has distinct roles in synthesizing glycoconjugates and saccharide structures. The encoded protein functions mainly in glycolipid biosynthesis and localizes to the Golgi apparatus. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants are known.
